In other news... the first of the free samples we have been requesting arrived in the mail yesterday. It was very exciting! The samples are FrizzEase hair products, Skin Genesis moisturizers, and Sensodyne toothpaste from Wal-Mart. This is a picture of our really good friend Charles with the freebies. As you can see he has a particular interest in the toothpaste. Maybe he is trying to tell us something.
I ran through some calculations using the price of Sensodyne Toothpaste for Sensitive Teeth and Cavity Prevention, Maximum Strength, Extra Whitening, 6-Ounce Tubes (Pack of 3)
and dividing out the ounceage at amazon (for some reason I couldn't find it at Walmart.com) resulting in a freebie worth $0.88.
Skin creams = $0.28
Hair Products = $1.42
Total = $2.58!
So before you scoff and ask was it worth the 49 seconds of filling out your address online and possibly exposing your email and home address to countless spammers for years to come, ponder this....
Having read many a personal finance blog I am sure you figured out what is coming by now....
Hypothetically if we really needed these products we would have saved $2.58 by getting them free. Now, lets say we invested that money in an IRA (To protect its growth from the government) and expected and received the normal stock market index gains for 40 years (putting the old Lmeister and myself at 64/65) the IRA would contain $136 and change. Not bad for 49 seconds.
Now lets say we bury our Vanguard account numbers in a time capsule and hid it away really deep (Plastic container only, as to not be found by metal detectors). We then go to
http://futureme.org/ and (if the site allowed this far into the future) establish an email reminder to send to some unchanging family email account in the year 2139 with coordinates, a description, and a coupon for a shovel. That lucky offspring would inherit
$1,000,000. An Awesome and fun tool I used to calculate this is
Dave Ramsey's Investment Calculator shown below. Plug in some real numbers of your current situation and see how one less meal out or one less Starbucks a week can mean thousands.

Now, to throw things really for a loop, how much is that worth after inflation has had 131 years to munch at its purchasing power. Lets head out to yet another neato free web
tool.
Based on an inflation rate of 3.00 % the value of $1,000,000.00 is going to be reduced to $20,812.47 of purchasing power in 131 years. That should still buy a used Toyota, maybe we will have those flying ones.
Begin to plant your own
free $20,812.47, and make that 4th generation of you a happy camper.
