Net Worth: October 2008 -5.22% or -$1,201

Are you sure Halloween wasn't yesterday? The days go by so quickly if you don't stop and think for a bit, something I need to slow down and do much more of. Good news to report: I am in the process of experiencing a new career tract and will be starting month two in the wonderful world of private equity at a local firm here in Rochester...more on this later. Here is an update on our situation and how our books are weathering the turbulence, or should I say getting moist and all wet paper like.

October 2008 Summary:
(financials as of 10/31/2008)

This month we were fortunate enough to experience a net worth loss of only 5.22% or $1,201. This loss was fueled by a big expected downturn in our portfolio of over 18% ($2,438) ouch.. Even the added cream of an additional paycheck this month couldn't mount that hurdle, at least not at my salary. The net worth chart below now looks like a big fishing pole reeling in a monster nine foot sturgeon.

Additional spreadsheets:

  • Where did the money go? October 2008 edition.
A Full breakdown of our income and spending categories. The 5% fun fund system is also shown in practice here.
  • Alternative Income Details
We were able to add over $340 to our monthly income for October, not nearly as much as in months past and only because our effort level waned (something we are going to rectify). Take a look at our detailed tracking spreadsheet as we continue to work to grow these opportunities.

Goals:

  • Goal#1: $10k Emergency Fund - Complete @ $10,445. Still full and interest growing, no impact.
  • Goal#2: High Interest Student Loans - at $25,331 Not much change in October. November on the other hand packs a massive punch, more in a post that I am thinking about making soon.
  • Goal#3: House down payment - $0 of $40,000 saved. Since this is currently the third stacked goal, it may be a little while before we achieve spillover.

Goals

Here are our current list of goals as we discover what it means to be wealthy, abandon the deferred life plan, and work to design a fulfilling and sustainable life.
  1. Have an emergency fund of 6-9 months living expenses. Accomplished: June '08
  2. Eliminate higher interest student loans. A few of our big guys have some nasty rates attached to them, these must be destroyed.
  3. Save for a down payment on a house. Accomplished! May '09 we bought a house!
When we started this blog we set a goal to have a zero net worth one year later. We are getting closer but our priorities sure have changed since then.
