Opportunity to support: Kiva Entrepreneur, community organizations

by Ry@SpillingBuckets on November 28, 2008

We are happy to announce that we are able to support another Kiva entrepreneur and make charitable donations with a portion of our blog income.

New Entrepreneur: Isaac Nartey from Koforidua, Ghana

Isaac Nartey is a 40-year-old married man with three children, all of whom are in school. He owns and operates a grocery shop in his neighborhood, where he sells items such as sugar, vegetable oil, bottled water, pastries, powdered milk, and biscuits.

He is now seeking a loan so that he can increase his store’s inventory by purchasing more crates of assorted drinks, bags of sugar, cartons of vegetable oil, and boxes of biscuits. In turn, he hopes to increase his savings to support his children while they are in school.

Isaac belongs to the Trust group known as the God is Good Trust Group. In this group, members guarantee each other’s loans as social collateral (i.e., if one member does not promptly repay his or her portion of the loan, then the other members are responsible for curing the arrears), and they provide support for one another to repay their respective loans.

Update on other entrepreneuers we are working with:

Mr. Komedja – Opened a dry cleaning store called ETS EL DORADO in Agoe, Togo. He has repaid 25% of his loan by Kiva lenders.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Lan – Works raising pigs and chickens in Nghi Loc, Viet Nam. She has repaid 17% of her loan by Kiva Lenders.

Also helping those without basic necessities here in Rochester, we are fortunate enough to be able to provide financial assistance to The Open Door Mission of Rochester and The Flower City Habitat for Humanity.

Thanks to everyone for making this possible. It truly is a motivating factor to know that the more success we experience, the more we can work to spark sustainable opportunity in others.

Great to hear that you are a Kiva fan!! If you (or your friends / family) are interested in getting more involved with Kiva, we have two core volunteer programs:

• Kiva Fellows Program: Individuals spend 10 weeks to one year with a microfinance institution in a developing country, chronicling the lives of the working poor and assisting the microfinance institutions to maximize their relationship with Kiva. ( http://www.kiva.org/fellows)

** We are still recruiting Portuguese, Nepali, Arabic, Vietnamese and French speakers for our KF7 class, departing in February 2009.

• Kiva Translation Program: Volunteering from their own homes, individuals take entrepreneurs’ loan profiles written in the local language and translate to English, which are then posted for lending on Kiva.org. Kiva Translators help bring the entrepreneurs' stories to life for potential lenders. ( http://www.kiva.org/volunteer)

** Languages needed include: Bahasa Indonesia, French, Mongolian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese.
