Random Act of Kindness

Last Thursday Ryan was at the Toastmaster's of Rochester working on his speaking skills, and I was out doing more mystery shops to increase our alternative income for December. It was really late when I finally was heading home, and I knew it would just be me for dinner that night (Ryan would eat at the meeting), so I decided to do something I hardly ever do and grab Wendy's to go.

I pulled into the drive in, and ordered my three items from the dollar menu and began moving up to pay for the food. There was a pretty long line at the Wendy's and as I waited I glanced back to the car behind me. In the car was an older couple who were laughing; they looked really nice and were obviously in love. It was then that I decided that I would do something random - I decided to pay for their meal.

When I got to the register window I paid for my meal, and for theirs. This brought my total up to about $10 rather than $4, but I felt good about it. The people behind me had no idea, and I hope it made their day. I wondered if they would do the same for the car behind them, or just accept the meal and move on. I didn't get a chance to see their reaction or anything, but that wasn't the point.

I've never really done things like this before, and I don't know what really prompted the action - but I felt really good the rest of the night just knowing that at least I made their night a little bit easier.

Have you ever done something that was a Random Act of Kindness? Have you ever been the recipient of a random act?

Our current list of goals as we discover what it means to be wealthy, abandon the deferred life plan, and work to design a fulfilling and sustainable life.

  • Emergency fund of 6-9 months living expenses. Accomplished: June '08

  • Save for a down payment on a house. Accomplished! May '09 Holy moley, we bought a house!
  • When we started this blog we set a goal to have a party on the date we crossed over to zero net worth. We made it! January 6th, 2010!
  • 100% debt free.
We know the normal thinking about low interest student loan and mortgage debt, but just think how weird would it be to be debt free. How many unique things could we do with little or no major financial obligations and no payments. Gets the mind working, huh?
