Adopt-A-Thon

by Les@SpillingBuckets on August 15, 2009

I am still a volunteer with Lollypop Farms, the large shelter in Rochester that takes in all sorts of domestic animals. You may recall how during one of my first times there a degu chewed threw the back wall of his cage and escaped.

Well – this summer, with the onset of “kitten season” and the continued recession, Lollypop is overflowing with cats and kittens. Its practically raining cats and kittens!

Before yesterday we hadn’t had more than one adoption in weeks but more and more were being turned in to the overcrowded shelter. Many of the cats have been at Lollypop for months, and we have had to put down many new cats that are turned in because of a lack of space. If you are thinking about adding a friend to your family, but were concerned about the price now is the time to do it.

Lollypop is hosting an Adopt-A-Thon. This weekend (August 14th – 16th only) all adult cats (1 year and older) are totally FREE! and all kittens (1 year and under) are 1/2 price, $60.

Yesterday was the first day of the Adopt-A-Thon, and at Petsmart we did pretty well. Volunteering last night was fun and it flew by. I got there a little earlier than usual for a Friday, and stayed late, but the time just whizzed.

At the end of the night we had adopted 6 cats. Scottsville Veterinary Clinic also has a PetSmart section for their shelter cats, and they are having a sale too – all cats and kittens are $50 – they managed to adopt 3 last night too.

I heard from the main shelter that they had close to 30 adoptions!

The free cat weekend goes until Sunday at all Lollypop locations (PetSmart Henrietta, Greece Ridge Mall, Lollypop Farms in Fairport)

I am going to volunteer again this afternoon – hopefully it will be just as busy. If you are in Rochester and want a cat, stop on by! We’ll be there all day…
